Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was appointed Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Youth early this year, and right from the start, has embraced this portfolio, a combination of two ministries, with much interest and passion.
Datuk Haji Abdul Karim is currently the assemblyman for Asajaya. His mission is to develop these portfolios simultaneously, with an increase in tourism numbers as well as more national and international Sports-related events taking place in the state.
Besides the usual tourism attractions covering culture, heritage, beaches, flora and fauna, Datuk Abdul Karim is exploring new avenues in medical and sports tourism, having noted the popularity of visitors from neighbouring countries seeking medical treatment and services in the state. Also, sports events which have proven to increase visitor-cum-tourism arrivals.
Abdul Karim’s Ministry will continue to promote Sarawak as a preferred destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE), with many participants staying on to indulge in various leisure visits after their business agenda.
Top on his agenda would be to improve connectivity, covering digital, transportation, services, for both within the state and beyond its borders, to ensure Sarawak becomes a highly-sought after destination, for a multitude of opportunities that would bring development and progress for its people.
